Get winter ready with these cosy energy saving tips!
1. Curtains or blinds
More than one-third of winter heat can leak out windows. Use curtains or blinds to keep the warm in and the cold out - heavy curtains and blockout blinds are great to stop that cool breeze from getting in.Hot tip: Harness the sun - the natural warmer. Open curtains and blinds on sunny days to let in the heat and close all the curtains and windows at sunset to trap the warmth in your home.
2. Become a draft dodger
Air leakage can account for 15 to 25 per cent of winter heat loss at home and is the main culprit in summer by allowing the cool air generated by your air conditioner to escape.
Avoid up to 24 per cent of heat loss by sealing cracks, installing draught sealing tape around doors and windows, and using door stoppers.
3. Only heat the areas you need
Reducing the areas you need to heat by closing the doors to rooms you aren’t using, such as laundries and bathrooms, means you’ll use less energy to heat the rest of the house.
4. Lower the thermostat
Transporting ourselves back to summer at the touch of a button might be tempting, but during winter it’s best to set the temperature between 18 and 20 degrees, so set your heating systems thermostat in this range. Every degree you reduce your heating can save up to 10 per cent on your energy use.
Hot tip: If your heating system doesn’t have a thermostat, a room thermometer can help you keep your home cosy and in the perfect temperature zone.
5. Insulate your roof, walls and floors
Save on your electricity bills by installing insulation in your roof, walls and roof. According to Sustainability Victoria, a fully insulated home could save you up to 45 per cent a year on energy usage, as well as ensuring you’re perfectly comfortable this winter with minimum heating.
6. Maximise your comfort this winter with a Reposit smart solar and battery system
Finally use energy the way you want while still lowering your power bill. Blast the heater guilt-free without the added cost to your electricity bill.
Working with your solar panels, a smart solar battery system can predict how much electricity your panels will create, and will know when to store this in your battery to lower your power bills.
Some electricity plans charge different prices at different times throughout the day for using energy. A smart solar battery, will store the electricity generated from your solar panels in your battery for you to use at night when electricity is most expensive.
When your solar battery is full and your solar panels are producing more energy than your household is using, any energy you use at home during this time is essentially free.
Investing in a solar battery with Reposit Power’s smart software will save you money while letting you enjoy your heater, day or night. You can sit back and relax, without the stress about your upcoming power bill.
