Navigating the world of solar panels, batteries, and smart controllers.
A guide to smarter systems and maximum savings.
There are many reasons you may consider adding solar and batteries to your home; be it to reduce your carbon footprint and become less reliant on big energy companies, with the right system you could even become energy self-sufficient. Overwhelmingly, though, more and more Australians are investing in these systems to save money on their power bills, some with the intent of removing their electricity costs entirely - but in today’s complex and rapidly changing energy landscape, is that really a possibility?
When it comes to shopping for solar and batteries, the reality is, the average buyer is met with an overwhelming array of options and combinations to choose from, each promising efficiency and savings, but likely leaving them with more and more questions. One of the most important things to understand are the differences between combinations of solar panels, batteries, and a smart controller.
TL;DR: Which type of system is right for you? Go straight to our calculator to get your Home Energy Assessment. This free tool uses your smart meter data to assess whether solar, solar and battery, or a No Bill™ system is the best choice for your household.

Here's a quick guide to the three types of systems commonly sold in 2024:
1. Solar Only
Solar only systems harness the sun's power to directly fuel your home. These types of systems are ideal for reducing reliance on the grid while the sun is shining, but during cloudy days, or after the sun goes down, you'll have to continue purchasing energy from the grid. Energy produced by solar panels has to be used the moment it's produced, or you lose it. So you're only saving while the sun is out.
In a typical household, most energy is consumed in the morning (when you wake up and get ready to start your day), and in the evening (when you’re back at home, maybe cooking, watching television and have the lights switched on), these are considered “peak times.” On the contrary, “off-peak times” refer to the middle of day and night when households typically use the least amount of energy.
Remember, when considering a solar only system, most of a household's energy consumption happens when the sun isn't shining bright. So, while this option is usually the most affordable at the outset, it may result in only small reductions in a household's overall energy bill, and down the track could even lead to an increase in your energy bill thanks to falling feed-in tariffs (Read more on this here).
2. Solar and Battery
Adding a battery significantly improves energy self-sufficiency. With the right management technology, you can charge your battery for free while it’s sunny and use the stored energy throughout peak-times in the evening. Without intelligent management, though, your inverter and battery alone cannot fully optimise your energy capture, storage, and costs. This means you may not be making the most of the system you've invested in. For significant bill reductions using a solar and battery system, you often have to increase the size of the system you purchase.
3. Solar and Battery with Smart Controller
The addition of a smart controller is a game-changer. It's the brain that tells all the parts how to function optimally, turning your home into an intelligent energy hub.
At Reposit, we offer a system packaged with a guarantee of no electricity bills for at least seven years, called No Bill™ (original, we know). All No Bill™ systems come complete with high-quality solar panels, inverter, batteries and our own Al-powered smart controller. This sophisticated device is designed and made in Australia, and is the core technology behind No Bill™. It intelligently manages your solar generation, battery storage, and grid interactions, optimising your energy usage and storage.
In exchange for your purchase of a system and participation in our Virtual Power Plant (VPP), we take responsibility for your electricity bill for at least seven years. That's 100% of your home energy costs covered by Reposit, meaning you'll pay $0 for electricity, everyday - guaranteed. In fact, you won’t even receive a bill.
The Reposit system is the only system in Australia that fully shields you from rising energy costs, falling feed-in tariffs, and ensures that you benefit from genuine bill savings all year round.
Here's what sets No Bill™ and Reposit apart from the rest:
We Guarantee No Bills for at least seven years:
Our smart energy management system intelligently balances your energy consumption and generation, ensuring you use the power you generate first, and only draw from the grid when necessary. Our technology provides a seamless and efficient solution for energy management, allowing Reposit to control energy costs through predictive load servicing, and to generate income by providing grid services like FCAS, RERT, and Network Support. This is how we can offer a genuine No Bill™ Guarantee, which means you'll never receive an electricity bill as long as you’re on No Bill™ (terms and conditions apply of course).
More Than Just Hardware:
While many solar and battery retailers focus solely on selling equipment, we go the extra mile. We provide a comprehensive solution that includes:
- World Leading Technology: Our smart controller intelligently manages your energy consumption and generation, maximising your self-sufficiency and reducing your reliance on the grid.
- Smart Software: Our intuitive app provides instantaneous, daily, monthly, and annual energy consumption measurements. Reposit's instantaneous energy consumption feature provides the market's fastest instantaneous energy measurements, allowing you to see in real-time the impact that different energy using appliances have on your energy consumption.
- Customer Support: We're here to help you every step of the way, from sale to installation, and ongoing support.
We’re Trusted
We’ve been operating since 2012 and our technology has been installed on over 6000 homes. Our No Bill™ product has recently been featured by Nine News, and The Guardian, and we've even been presented with Australia’s most highly regarded engineering award.
What’s the Catch?
When you purchase a Reposit No Bill™ system we ask you to agree to something called our Fair Use Cap. Your Fair Use Cap is calculated for you personally and takes into account your historical electricity consumption, future electricity needs (EV, gas appliance swap out, etc), seasonal profile (i.e. the amount of sunlight where you live), and even includes a 20% bonus.
As a part of No Bill™ you will also become a part of our Virtual Power Plant, that means we can utilise your system to help stabilise the grid during times of very low, or very high demand. This allows us to generate income by providing grid services like FCAS, RERT, and Network Support. This is how we can offer a genuine No Bill™ Guarantee, which means you'll never receive an electricity bill as long as you’re on No Bill™.
To support our offering, we recently launched a free tool which uses your smart meter data to assess whether solar, solar and battery, or a No Bill™ system is the best choice for your household. Why would our tool be better than someone else’s? Because if we sell you a No Bill system, we’re on the hook for bills for seven years, so we want to make sure we size up household energy needs as precisely as possible, to ensure eligibility and the best possible design.
